about

Auckland-based psych-rock quartet Makeshift Parachutes release their new single Flaming Can Superman. Recorded in the group’s studio in picturesque Riverhead during lock-down the track deals with feelings of inadequacy, escapism, empowerment, and inevitability that confront many of us in these tumultuous times.

The sound of Flaming Can Superman is brighter than its serious content suggests. The song feels like summer came early with its warm days and salty sea winds. Flaming Can Superman could be the soundtrack for a road trip down the coast or a sunny afternoon in the backyard with friends.

The track starts with Sharif O’Connor’s spacey arpeggiator synths shortly joined by his brother Daniel O’Connor’s driving bass line. Drummer Arthur Brewer weaves his percussions in to give the song its stompy rhythm. Flaming Can Superman comes to life through the words that escape lead vocalist Chris McCollum, joined by dreamy harmonies sung by Sharif. A surprise turn awaits the listener about halfway through the song, fitting Makeshift Parachutes’ eclectic vibe.

LYRICS

Pusha Man
Peter Pan
Put me back together again

Pieces fall
All we see
Is there you and is there a me

All the little people locked away inside their own little world

Flaming Can
Superman
Help me light the way if I can't avoid the night
Hold the light when I'm feeling low
If you can't afford the right kind of light it was ever within you

Passing time
Peace of mind
Goes it's way
I know I got mine

Turning on
Tuning in
Separately together again

All the little people locked away inside their own little world

Secret plan
Budget brand
Help me find the way if I can't avoid the night
Hold the light when my heart beats slow
If you can't afford the right kind of light it was ever within you

Future calls
Hooks are in
All in all
and ever it's been

Contraband
Rocket man
Send me on my way if you can

Explore the night hold me tight when my heart beat slows
If you can't afford the right kind of light it was ever within you

All the little people locked away inside their own little world

World is changing
Rearranging me
World is changing
Rearranging me
